چکیده

Introduction The Electricity and the Heart website 1 is intended to facilitate the collection, cataloging and presentation of historical information about technical and scientific advances in cardiac devices. Over the course of the past century as the fields of cardiac pacing and electrophysiology have evolved, the technological devices used by physicians and researchers has been a fascinating and rapidly changing portion of the history of the fields. NASPE's Oral History Project houses hundreds of devices collected over the years that illustrate the evolution from crude and simple machines to the sophisticated and advanced technological wonders that are used in the field today. The photos and descriptions of many of these devices show just how far we have come in the advancement of treatment and patient care.

External cardiac pacing using low impedance electrodes suitable for defibrillation: a comparative blinded study.

OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to determine whether the threshold for successful cardiac pacing is affected by electrode impedance and whether this procedure can be successfully carried out through low impedance electrodes that are also suitable for defibrillation. BACKGROUND Reintroduced in the early 1980s, external cardiac pacing utilizes large externally placed electrodes with ...

Modified alternating current defibrillation: a new defibrillation technique.

AIMS Defibrillation is the only clinically effective treatment for ventricular fibrillation (VF). Early defibrillation improves the outcome and increases the chance of survival with full recovery. Immediate availability of a home-based defibrillator using mains-derived alternating current (AC) current will drastically improve the outcome. The aim was to develop a defibrillator based on the modu...

The Automatic External Cardioverter-Defibrillator

In-hospital cardiac arrest remains a major problem but new technologies allowing fully automatic external defibrillation are available. These technologies allow the concept of "external therapeutic monitoring" of lethal arrhythmias. Since early defibrillation improves outcome by decreasing morbidity and mortality, the use of this device should improve the outcome of in-hospital cardiac arrest v...

T-wave oversensing during left ventricular pacing causing inappropriate defibrillation

Introduction Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) with left ventricular (LV)-only pacing has emerged as an alternative to biventricular (Bi-V) pacing used to synchronize ventricular contraction by timing LV pacing with intrinsic right ventricular (RV) conduction. Additionally, RV pacing is minimized, improving device longevity. Despite its benefits, LV pacing may not the best modality for al...

Electroporation of the heart.

Defibrillation shocks are commonly used to terminate life-threatening arrhythmias. According to the excitation theory of defibrillation, such shocks are aimed at depolarizing the membranes of most cardiac cells resulting in resynchronization of electrical activity in the heart. If shock-induced changes in transmembrane potential are large enough, they can cause transient tissue damage due to el...
